Excerpt - Turning Back What have I done?" Joanna Mathis slid her sweating palms down the expensive wool of her suit coat. It took every ounce of inner strength to breathe without fear. Who was she kidding? This was a mistake. Dread consumed her. What was my mother thinking--and why did I agree to this? Her gaze darted around the busy hallway. The smiles and chatter of passing students in uniform did nothing to ease the hesitation and doubt which traveled through her veins. She should be calm. This was familiar territory--the same hallway she had walked for years--the same hallway she had trod as a new student so many years ago. It had been then when she had first laid eyes on-- "Joanna!" The rich deep baritone slid over her skin, and her gaze lifted from the speckled tile of the hall. Was she hallucinating, or was he actually here now? Dark brown eyes sparkled, and the handsome face broke into a smile to reveal a deep dimple on his right side. It was all too familiar. "Hello Nolan, what a surprise." What an odd twist of déjà vu. "Your mother told me you would be here today." He grinned, making him even more handsome--exactly as she remembered. Her stomach fluttered--or rolled with nerves--she couldn't determine which, but she did recognize the remorse that pinched her heart. "Wow, you came to the school here to see me." She sounded nervous and thirteen all over again--just like that first day. He shook his head and chuckled. "No not exactly." Oh, he still looked and sounded amazing. How presumptuous, of course he wouldn't come to see her after the horrible thing she did seven years ago. Guilt worked over her, punched up her nerves a notch. Her lips forced a smile. "Of course not. Sorry." His brow furrowed, and his eyes reflected worry for a mere instant. "I'm surprised your mother didn't tell you." A new sensation tickled her spine, too bad she couldn't identify it. "Tell me what?" "I'm now the assistant principal here at St. John's school." His full mouth curved into a smile and revealed his perfectly white teeth and memorable dimple. Joanna's heart slammed to a stop, although, she wasn't sure of the reason. Could be the fact she felt like she had walked into a set-up, or maybe it was the unwanted realization that after all these years, she was still attracted to him.
